The UPSC ESE 2017 has brought a golden opportunity for the engineering candidates to be a part of the Indian Government Machinery. However, the very first point under the ‘important’ section of the notification requests the candidates to check their eligibility criteria before making an application. In case, any of the eligibility criteria is not met, a candidate will not be considered for the available posts. So, let’s check the UPSC Eligibility Criteria for ESE 2017.

The very first eligibility criteria for UPSC ESE Exam is in terms of nationality of a candidate. A candidate has to prove that he belongs to one of the following:

  • A citizen of India
  • A subject of Bhutan
  • A subject of Nepal
  • A person of Indian origin, who previously lived in East Africa or Africa (countries like Zambia. Malawi, etc.), Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Burma, or any other Indian sub-continent, and now intends to settle in India permanently.
  • A descendant of a Tibetan Refugee, who crossed into India before 1/1/1962.

Failing to qualify under any of the given conditions mentioned above will result into failure of meeting the Nationality Criteria.

The age of the candidate should be in between 21 years to 30 years computed from 1.1.2017. However, with consideration for age relaxation for specified categories of people, the department will grant cushion to the following:

Category Age Relaxation
Ex. Servicemen 5 years
Schedule Caste/ Schedule Tribe 5 years
Other backward castes 3 years
Defence Servicemen (disabled) 3 years

A candidate needs to have a Degree in Engineering from a recognized Institute to apply for UPSE ESE Exam 2017. Educational qualification in form of Diploma from a foreign University/ College etc., Pass certificate of Graduate Membership Examination from ITTE (Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers) are also accepted.

This criteria has to be satisfied after a candidate has cleared the written test. Under this test, a candidate is required to appear in the respective Railways Hospitals and prove his medical fitness. Irrespective of whether a candidate has been through a similar test earlier or not, it is mandatory for all candidates to appear for the Medical Examination and pass the same.

The last criteria for UPSC ESE Exam 2017 is in terms of physical fitness of a candidate. Just like medical examination, this examination takes place after the written examination. In this examination a candidate is tested in terms of physical abilities under a series of test. Candidates who pass this test, get selected.

While availing the benefits under eligibility criteria, that is, age relaxation, a candidate is required to give a proof of the same. Failing to prove his claim will result in withdrawal of benefits which the candidate was looking forward to avail earlier.
