The government-owned corporations are termed as Public Sector Undertakings(PSUs) in India. In a PSUs majority (51% or more) of the paid up share capital is held by central government or by any state government or partly by the central governments and partly by one or more state governments.

Organizations typically hold entrance exams as a critical step in the selection process for PSU jobs. Such entrance exams are followed by group discussions and a personal interview. There are certain PSUs that do not conduct their own entrance exams to hire engineers. Instead, they consider the candidate's performance in the GATE exam. Clearing the GATE exam is considered as a compulsory criterion to screen candidates. There were 14 such PSUs, including NTPC, BPCL, BEL and BHEL, that conducted their recruitment via GATE 2013. Mostly, the age limit for PSU jobs is 25 to 28 years. The application should at least be a graduate. Further eligibility criteria are defined by the particular organization and job in question.
