GATE 2021 Exam Pattern has been revised. There has been an addition of two new subjects in GATE 2021- Environmental Science & Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Sciences (XH). Candidates will now be able to sit for one and a maximum of two papers. GATE 2021 has also undergone change in the distribution of marks. 

GATE 2021 is a 3-hour online test where candidates will have to attempt 65 questions carrying 100 marksGATE 2021 Syllabus consists of three sections, General Aptitude, Mathematical Engineering and Core-subject Specific Section, for most of the papers.

  • As per the revised GATE 2021 exam pattern, for the papers with codes AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, 15% marks weightage will be given to General Aptitude, 13% to Engineering Mathematics and remaining 72% to subject paper.
  • Papers with codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 85% of the total marks are for the subject paper.
  • For revised GATE 2021 Exam Pattern, apart from MCQs, GATE 2021 Question Paper will also include Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NATs) Questions. 
    • MSQs are objective type questions with choices of four answers out of which one or more than one choice(s) are correct. There will be no negative marking for such questions and each question will carry 1 or 2 marks each. 
    • NAT are 1 to 2 mark questions in most of the papers with numerical value-based answers. There will be no choices for such questions and the answer can be a signed real number, an integer or decimal.
    • For MCQ type questions +1 or 2 marks will be awarded for correct answers whereas ⅓ marks will be deducted for 1 mark question and ⅔ for 2 mark questions. No negative marking will be there in NAT and MSQs.
